Are Protein Diets Good or Bad?

A high protein and/or low carbohydrate diet is not a simple weight loss program that is fast and easy to do. Many people have started this “fad” diet but it is not a long-term solution. There can be immediate weight loss for certain people, but there can be negative side effects of this diet.

This type of diet is not new, the Dr. Atkins’ Diet as been around since the 1970’s and has reemerged in the ‘90s, along with several other protein diets. These diets re-appear and continue to exist because they do not work long term. If they did, America would be a lot less obese and new diets would not be popping up all the time.

In high protein diets most of your daily calories come from protein. This limits your intake of foods that contain carbohydrates. Carbohydrate containing foods include: milk, fruit, fruit juice, grains, bread, cereals, pasta, and vegetables. The result is a diet high in protein and fat from foods like meat, fish, eggs, cheese, butter, and oils. Proteins and fats are needed for some important body functions, such as building muscle and protecting cells. However, the functions that carbohydrates perform are just as important and exclusive, and in some cases help the proteins and fats do their job!

So why does this diet seem to work for some people?

Any restriction in calories will result in some weight loss. It may be too difficult to get your daily required calories when trying to plan meals around mostly protein and fat. Most of the immediate weight lost is water, and the person will most likely gain the weight back when he or she stops the diet. Eliminating food groups or eating an abundance of any one food is not healthy, is difficult to maintain, and does not teach a person good long-term eating habits. Eating a balanced diet, remembering to eat in moderation, and getting regular exercise are the keys to maintaining weight.
